Different outreaches require different plans. Here are some basic guidelines to follow:
1. Cover every part of the outreach in prayer
2. Make sure you gear your event to shut down every distraction while someone who can present the gospel clearly and effectively to all ages does their thing (this is what we do best!) Example: Many block parties or festivals have trains for kids to ride on...shut it down during the gospel presentation or ask them not to blow the whistle or ring the bell if they are taking care of kids that are too young to understand the gospel.
3. Make sure the sound system is adequate for the need. Outdoor areas need lots of power and amplification. Your sound guy is just as important as your speaker! Find a good person to run sound. Consider every factor as you plan.
4. Have counselors prepared to lead others to a commitment to Christ.
5. If possible, make a record of all decisions so you can follow-up. This is where most churches mess up. New Christians need help starting out and will need you to follow-up on their commitment and help them to continue living for Christ.
6. One recommended way to get a record is to have a give-away. After the gospel has been presented, pass out cards to those in the audience/crowd. Mention that you're glad they came and that you want a record of their attendance and that they will also have the opportunity "to win this bicycle and some other cool prizes" or whatever you can give away. Then emphasize this very clearly, "Also, you've just heard a great presentation and this guy has shared the truth with you. If you made the choice to become a Christian for the very first time tonight, there is a place on the card for you to mark that so we can celebrate with you and pray for you and give you a Bible and some other materials the church has for you. Please mark that spot so we can do that for you if you prayed with Nathan to become a Christian for the first time tonight!" This will increase your ability to follow-up.
7. Have things that attract people and keep people's attention: jugglers :-), giant inflatable games, races, fun contests, concert artists, FOOD, family events, PETTING ZOO, water games, SHADED AREAS TO REST, free cold water in Jesus' name, a young children's area where parents can leave their toddlers and feel comfortable about it...
